Rachael Bewers joined Gadsby Wicks as a Senior Solicitor in January 2025, bringing over 20 years of experience in clinical negligence and personal injury claims.

Managing a varied caseload of medical negligence claims, Rachael's dedication, empathy and attention to detail have helped her secure successful outcomes for her clients, ensuring they feel heard and supported at every step of the process.

I enjoy the challenge of investigating and resolving the legal and medical complexities of medical negligence claims. No two cases or clients are the same, and I adapt my approach to suit each individual claim. As a result, I like to think my work not only helps my clients secure their financial future, but improves standards of care so others do not find themselves in a similar situation.

Why did you become a medical negligence solicitor?

I've always felt happiest when I'm following a process with clear rules and striving to achieve a good result. I enjoy the intellectually challenging nature of my work as a solicitor, and engaging with a wide range of clients.

I was especially drawn to medical negligence claims as I appreciated the challenge they presented from both a legal and medical point of view. No two cases or clients are the same, which means no two days are the same for me. I also firmly believe that my work not only helps my clients at a particularly challenging point of their lives, but makes a difference to the standards of healthcare in general, ensuring others don't suffer similar outcomes in the future.

What is your legal background?

I qualified as a solicitor in October 2003, initially specialising in personal injury claims. After working for several London-based firms, I moved to Thompsons Solicitors in Chelmsford in 2007.

It was at Thompsons that I began to focus more on medical negligence, moving into their Clinical Negligence team in 2010. After leaving Thompsons, I began working in-house in 2016, leaving at the end of 2018 due to family commitments.

For the next three-and-a-half years, I worked with a local charity on a pro bono basis, and at the beginning of 2022, I joined a commercial in-house legal team. Joining Gadsby Wicks was my opportunity to resume my passion for clinical negligence work.

What motivated you to join Gadsby Wicks?

Gadsby Wicks has an enviable nationwide reputation for their knowledge and expertise in clinical negligence, which they have developed over many years. They are true specialists in medical negligence, as it's the sole focus of their work.

After spending several years in legal sectors that I did not find nearly as fulfilling or rewarding as my time working in medical negligence, I wanted to be part of a firm that strives for excellence and works hard for its clients. So when I saw an opportunity to join Gadsby Wicks, I had to pursue it. I have always been a claimant medical negligence lawyer at heart!

Plus, I had previously worked with both Corrina Mottram and Jessica Wright at Thompsons, so I knew that I would enjoy being part of their team.

What are your responsibilities at Gadsby Wicks?

As a Senior Solicitor, I deal with a varied caseload of medical negligence claims on behalf of my clients. This involves regularly speaking to and holding meetings with my clients, instructing independent experts and barristers, liaising with defendants, drafting documents and attending Court hearings.

My ability to actively listen to my clients and my attention to detail help me act effectively for my clients at every stage of the process. I approach every case with empathy, dedication and perseverance to achieve the best possible outcome.

What do you find fulfilling about your role?

I find it greatly fulfilling when I can help my clients gain some closure following a distressing or traumatic experience. Ideally, this will include securing compensation that makes my clients' lives a little easier and relieves the financial pressure they're facing. But even if this isn't possible, being able to provide answers to difficult questions about their medical treatment can make a significant difference.

In addition, I appreciate that my work doesn't simply support my clients, but can encourage changes in healthcare practices and standards that prevent others from suffering medical mistakes.

What do you do outside of Gadsby Wicks?

I enjoy spending time with my husband and daughters, playing the piano and singing for my community choir (which I am also on the committee for).

I also like to participate in challenging charity fundraisers. In 2024 I climbed Mount Snowdon, while in 2025 I plan on walking the Jurassic Coast.
